Mechanical Properties of Acrylic Bone Cement Containing the New Soluble Contrast Medium - Iohexol Hexaacetate

ثبت نشده
چکیده

INTRODUCTION Acrylic bone cements, used in arthroplasty, incorporates contrast media to make them radiopaque and visible on X-ray images. However, today’s particulate contrast media cause three disadvantages to the acrylic bone cement, namely; third body wear, decreased mechanical properties and reduced biocompatibility. Iohexol hexaacetate (IHA) is a new iodide based non-ionic contrast medium, and is a pro-drug of the clinically used contrast medium iohexol. This new contrast medium is molecularly dissolved in acrylate monomer and hence not a particulate contrast medium. This investigation is the first to determine the fatigue properties of an acrylic bone cement containing iohexol hexaacetate. This study also investigates the compressive, tensile and flexural properties.

Effect of iodixanol particle size on the mechanical properties of a PMMA based bone cement.

Iodixanol (IDX) is a water soluble opacifier widely used in radiographical examinations of blood vessels and neural tissue, and it has been suggested as a potential contrast media in acrylic bone cement. The effect of the iodixanol particle size on the polymerisation process of the bone cement, the molecular weight, and the quasi-static mechanical properties have been investigated in this artic...

Critical evaluation of pulse-echo ultrasonic test method for the determination of setting and mechanical properties of acrylic bone cement: influence of mixing technique.

Currently there is no reliable objective method to quantify the setting properties of acrylic bone cements within an operating theatre environment. Ultrasonic technology can be used to determine the acoustic properties of the polymerising bone cement, which are linked to material properties and provide indications of the physical and chemical changes occurring within the cement. The focus of th...

Optimisation of a two-liquid component pre-filled acrylic bone cement system: a design of experiments approach to optimise cement final properties.

The initial composition of acrylic bone cement along with the mixing and delivery technique used can influence its final properties and therefore its clinical success in vivo. The polymerisation of acrylic bone cement is complex with a number of processes happening simultaneously. Acrylic bone cement mixing and delivery systems have undergone several design changes in their advancement, althoug...

The behavior of novel hydrophilic composite bone cements in simulated body fluids.

Composite bone cements were formulated with bioactive glass (MgO--SiO(2)--3CaO. P(2)O(5)) as the filler and hydrophilic matrix. The matrix was composed of a starch/cellulose acetate blend (SCA) as the solid component and a mixture of methylmethacrylate/acrylic acid (MMA/AA) as the liquid component. The curing parameters, mechanical properties, and bioactive behavior of these composite cements w...

Validation of the Small Punch Test Technique to Measure the Mechanical Properties of Acrylic Bone Cement

Introduction The main function of acrylic bone cement is to transfer loads from the prosthesis to the cancellous bone or increase the load carrying capacity of the surgical prosthesis. If the imposed stresses are greater than the load carrying capability, then cement fracture may occur resulting in failure of the joint replacement. The fracture of the cement mantle and subsequent premature loos...
